I thought I would introduce you to the beautiful Tracey Adams who is going to be presenting at Smileez on the 30th of November. Tracey is a successful Professional Stylist, a Mum of 2 & I was lucky to be introduced to her, when I rid myself of 25kgs & needed to find a new wardrobe, to celebrate my new figure. I will let you be amazed with this insight into Tracey & her take on Styling for the real Mum. Take it away Tracey.
“When I look back to a few years ago when my kids were babies, it just seems like such a blur. I remember feeling amazingly tired of course and overwhelmed because although it is a very special time, your life has completely shifted. Your whole world revolves around all things babies and children.
As mums, everyone else in our world comes first meaning there’s very little or no time for us. I remember feeling a sense of dread whenever I needed to get dressed up to go out – because what once looked good no longer sat the same way on me or fitted properly and so any social invitations would send me into panic mode – what am I going to wear??
I said no to a lot of invites at first – mostly because I just couldn’t put myself through the massive effort of trying to find something, anything that worked because it always ended in frustration and even tears because what once looked great and made me feel amazing now just made me feel terrible. My body had changed but I couldn’t figure it out. It was just so much easier to say no.
My husband would get annoyed at me because he couldn’t really understand what was going on – he thought I looked fab and had a wardrobe full of clothes – where’s the problem??
I’d try and go shopping but it would usually end in disaster because I had no idea what to look for or what really suited me anymore. There was also the pressure of feeling like it was a wasted trip if I didn’t at least get something so I’d end up buying things that I wasn’t really sure about or being swayed by the shop assistant and those items would just sit in my wardrobe never to be touched again. They just didn’t make me feel amazing and confident when I put them on. A complete waste of time and money.
I ended up living in my maternity wear way longer than I needed to – the bigger and baggier the better as far as I was concerned although all that did was make me feel worse.
It was only by pure chance one day that I saw an ad for a personal stylist and told my husband I would love a session for my upcoming birthday. I’d always loved fashion but I never felt confident in my choices and I was always in two minds as to whether things really suited me or not.
That session turned out to be life changing for me and I loved every minute of it. I was so apprehensive beforehand and so worried about what the stylist would think of my choices but it was the complete opposite and amazingly, a lot of fun!
We started with a wardrobe audit where the stylist came to my home to help me cull those items that didn’t suit my shape or colouring and the time just absolutely flew by. After doing a (very painless) body shape assessment, a whole new world opened up before me. I now knew what cuts of jeans and pants suited my shape where previously I didn’t have a clue as to what to choose from straight leg, bootcut, wide leg, skinny leg etc!! She also taught me the cuts of tops to look for (I had always struggled with top choices, do I go wide strap or skinny strap, do off the shoulder tops suit, what about halterneck?? etc) and we also talked about the cuts of skirts, jackets and shoes.
All of a sudden it all made sense, it was so logical! I couldn’t wait to get into my wardrobe and cull those things that didn’t suit me. It was a really liberating, fun experience.
After we’d finished and thrown out quite a few items we now had a shopping list of things I needed to buy to fill the gaps but this time I would be buying cuts and styles that suited me.
Our next session was a personal shopping expedition where the stylist took me shopping based on all the information she had about me – my age, body shape, lifestyle and budget etc. Again, I was a bit apprehensive – what if she put me in things I thought were hideous?? The shopping trip turned out to be just as much fun as the wardrobe audit if not more because the stylist did all the work! It was so pain free and easy for me as the stylist chose all the items while I got to relax and then all I had to do was try on beautiful things!
The most interesting thing was the amount of items that I never would’ve even looked at, let alone try on – they just looked fantastic on and I actually felt fantastic. The cut and colours she was choosing just suited me down to the ground and I couldn’t believe the amount of items I was falling in love with when previously I’d been buying one or two items that I didn’t even particularly like.
After these sessions I actually had a wardrobe that worked! I had mix and match items I could quickly put together each day whether I was taking the kids to a park or a playdate or something dressier for date night with hubby. He was really pleased with the outcome too – he loved the new things I bought plus he could see the new found confidence I had. Plus, there was the fact I wasn’t wasting money anymore on incorrect purchases!
All I wanted to be able to do was walk out the door each day feeling amazing and 100% confident in what I was wearing and I had that in spades.
These sessions really were life changing for me and such an amazing investment – I loved it so much I started working in the industry because I’m passionate about helping people regain their confidence and style.
Before I had my sessions I thought that a Personal Stylist was something that only celebrities or the wealthy could afford and that was another reason I joined the Style with Cindy team because their philosophy is that it’s for the “everyday person”. We work with people from all walks of life, all ages, or sizes and all budgets.
I was thrilled when Libby asked me to speak at the upcoming LOL mums morning tea because I think events like this are really important for mums to get together and have a little break from the workload and to feel like they’re supported, especially when your kids are little. It’s just nice to take a little bit of time out and have a cuppa and a chat.
So, roll on 30th November – looking forward to it!!”
